sorting my thoughts... in logarithmic time

bits and bytes from my digital junk drawer

When you try to copy Apple, that’s like trying to copy an oak tree. You have to plant the seed and watch it grow and see what it came up with. You can’t then just watch what it became, go to home depot, buy a whole bunch of lumber, paint and fake leaves then build something, because what you build is gonna be half assed and not an oak tree in any way, shape or form.

When a man walks into a room, he brings his whole life with him. He has a million reasons for being anywhere—just ask him. If you listen, he’ll tell you how he got there, how he forgot where he was going, and then he woke up. If you listen, he’ll tell you about the time he thought he was an angel, or dreamt of being perfect, and then he’ll smile with wisdom, content that he realized the world isn’t perfect. We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things, and wish for what we had.

My Microsoft Live Experience

Here’s a brief rundown of my recent experience with MS Live (and specifically Games for Windows / Xbox Live):

1. I had an Xbox Live account, but the “Live ID” was my old .edu email address which I couldn’t access

2. I had bought a game for windows on Steam, and I registered that CD-Key to a new Live Account, the Live ID being my gmail address. I promptly forgot all about this.

3. I wanted to change the xbox live account to my gmail address, so I tried doing that online and got a vague system error telling me to try again

4. I called Xbox support a few days later, saying I couldn’t change my live ID. They said it was under maintenance and to try again later.

5. A few days later, I still couldn’t do it, so I called again. They said I already had a live account on my gmail address. I forgot that it had my windows game registered to it. The solution for this was to create a third (temporary) “live” account, making sure not to set up Xbox Live on it. Then I could change the ID of my gmail-games-for-windows account to the temporary account and change the ID of my xbox account from my old .edu address to my gmail address. But this had to be done on the Xbox, not over the phone or on the PC.

6. Finally, I had my Xbox setup to use my gmail address for its ID. I win at Xbox!

7. Months later, I couldn’t play the Windows game because my CD key had already been used. I had forgotten about the temporary account, so I called support and they looked up the CD-Key and reminded me about that account. I remembered the password.

8. I could now play the game by logging into the temporary account, but I didn’t like that it was under an email address that I don’t use. So I went to switch it again.

9. I called support again, and they again said I couldn’t merge the windows game into the xbox live account, so I decided I would use my secondary email address that I also check.

10. I try to setup a new live account on the secondary email address, but apparently there is an account there already, but I can’t recover the password. I call support again. They say they have no record of the account on my secondary email address, so it must be “halfway set up”. The reset password function does not work, and I can’t get in.

11. The solution to all of this is to create yet another live account. Under a fourth email address. I do this, set up auto-forwarding to gmail, and again, I have to go on my Xbox, log into the games for windows ID, which has nothing to do with Xbox… Then change the ID onscreen to the fourth email address.

12. Finally, I have Xbox Live set up on my gmail account, and a Games for Windows Live account set up on an email address that I check. I also have a “half set up” account and a temporary hotmail account that I’ll never use.

Customer support was great throughout this, but the way the system is put together is pretty cumbersome. After all of this, I’m not sure it was even worth my while.

Boom chick boom boom boom chick!

And I swear, by the moon and the stars in the sky… I’ll be there
